Zurich isn’t exactly the cheapest city in Europe for a budget traveller to visit. In fact it is one of the most expensive places we’ve ever visited. But here are some suggestions for 10 things to enjoy in Zurich that won’t empty your wallet.
Walk along the Limmat River
A great way to start your visit to Zurich is by walking along the Limmat river. During the walk you’ll pass the the old historical town of Zurich with many of it’s attractive buildings. You can easily spend a few hours enjoying this walk and even sip a coffee in one of the many cafes.
Altstadt
The charming old town of Zurich is more commonly known as Altstadt. In it’s small cobbled walkways you can pick up some souvenirs, eat at a restaurant or admire the beautiful old buildings. Like us, you may also notice how clean and tidy this district is.
Grossmünster
Grossmünster is one of Zurich’s four major churches and local legend claims that it was was founded by Charlemagne. The church is certainly magnificent inside and out. For a small fee you can climb one of the towers for a great view of the city.
Fraumünster
Fraumünster is built on the remains of a former abbey. Make sure you check out the stained-glass windows on the inside. On the outside, the view from the bridge which crosses the Limmat river is definitely worth a photo.
Zurich Zoological Garden
If you have a few hours to spare Zurich Zoological Garden may be worth a visit. The zoo is home to over 380 different species of animals. The penguin parade was a particular highlight and attracted a large crowd on our visit.
FIFA HQ
A short walk away from Zurich Zoo are the FIFA headquarters. There’s not much to see really and you can’t go inside. But if you’re a football fan, at least you can say you’ve seen the offices of the world governing body.
Hole-in-the-wall eateries
Want to save some money when eating in Zurich? Then buy some fresh food from one the many hole-in-the-wall eateries that are located around the city. We tried some food from a few such places around Altstadt and they were very tasty indeed.
Lake Zurich
At the southern end of the city centre is Lake Zurich. There’s a nice promenade here and a few small piers jutting out onto the lake. We visited on a Sunday when visitors and locals alike were both out admiring the view.
Bahnhofstrasse
Even though we want to save you some money, you can still window shop along Bahnhoffstrasse. This is world’s most expensive and exclusive shopping avenue. Some of the stores include Gucci, Prada and Cartier. We didn’t notice an equivalent to Poundworld though!
Take a day trip to Rhine Falls
Located on the outskirts of Zurich, we would recommend visiting Rhine Falls. These spectacular falls are nearly 75 ft high and 490 ft wide and are overlooked by Laufen Castle. There’s a nice walk around the falls with lots of opportunities for you to get some great pictures.
